How to Slay the Festive Season and Skip the Flare

The holiday season is meant to be a time of joy, but for chronic pain warriors, it often feels more like a whirlwind of stress and fatigue. The chaos of shopping, socializing, and decorating can trigger flare-ups, leaving you longing for a moment of peace. But what if you could experience the magic of the season without pushing your body to the limit?

This is where hygge(pronounced hue-guh) can create some real holiday magic. Hygge is a beautiful Danish concept of embracing comfort, coziness, and simple pleasures. There are simple ways to bring hygge joy into your holidays, so you can enjoy the season without flaring up or burning out. From creating a peaceful space to setting boundaries you can find a way to inject calm and joy into the festive chaos. Because whether we are living with chronic pain or we all deserve a holiday that nurtures both body and soul.

In my recent article published in Om Yoga Magazine, I have outlined six simple steps to help you turn the holidays into a big warm hug.

  • Cozy up your space – Transform your home into a soothing retreat by adding soft lighting, warm blankets, and calming touches like candles and fairy lights. Create a cozy corner where you can retreat and recharge when the holiday hustle gets overwhelming.
  • Work smarter, not harder – Simplify holiday tasks like shopping, gift wrapping, and meal prep. Online shopping, festive gift bags, and easy recipes will save you time and energy, while involving friends and family in decorating and cooking can help lighten the load.
  • Treat yourself to a daily dose of self-care – Prioritize your well-being by creating simple, soothing rituals that support relaxation and rest. This could include gentle stretches, self-massage, or a warm bath to ease aches and recharge your energy.
  • Keep it simple – Embrace a “less is more” approach to the holidays. Let go of traditions that drain you, and focus on simple, nourishing experiences—like a cozy, intimate meal or quiet time with loved ones—that bring you comfort without overwhelming your body.
  • Create low-key gatherings – Instead of high-energy parties, opt for relaxed, small gatherings with close friends or family. Think cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and heartfelt conversations, or consider virtual hangouts if you’re not up for in-person socializing.
  • Set boundaries – Protect your energy by saying no when you need to. Set clear boundaries with yourself and others to avoid overcommitting, and honor the importance of rest. This will help you enjoy the holidays on your own terms, without feeling guilty for taking time to recharge.
